A Mountain Hut for the Whole Family
Whether it's a summer hike, a run through Bikepark Arber, or a day of skiing in winter – the Berghaus Sonnenfels mountain hut has been a fixed point on the Großer Arber since 1949. Traditional Bavarian cuisine, a large sun terrace and a warm-hearted team await you at 1,150 m.
In 2025 we thoroughly renovated our dining room – cosy wood, large tables for groups, and the same view over the Bavarian Forest as more than 70 years ago.

Summer & Hiking
Sun terrace with a view over the Bavarian Forest, hiking trails from Brennes, Bayerisch-Eisenstein, Bodenmais and the Kleiner Arbersee.
Winter & Skiing
Right on the blue slope in the Arber family ski area – 13 km of pistes, 9 lifts, one of the most snow-reliable areas in Germany.
Mountain Bike & E-Bike
Reachable only by bike or on foot. Charging station for 6 e-bikes and right next to Bikepark Arber.
Leon's Arber Hütte
Our rustic mountain hut right next door – space for 40 people, available to hire for private celebrations.
Sun Terrace & New Adventure Playground
Whether it's a relaxed afternoon with a view over the Bavarian Forest or romping around on the new playground right at the forest's edge – families with children of all ages will find their place here.

Where is Berghaus Sonnenfels located?
Berghaus Sonnenfels (Sonnenfels 1, 94252 Bayerisch-Eisenstein, Germany) is a staffed mountain hut at 1,150 m on the Großer Arber in the Bavarian Forest – right next to the Arber Bikepark and a blue slope of the Arber family ski area.
How do I get to Berghaus Sonnenfels?
The Berghaus is car-free and can only be reached on foot, by bike/e-bike or – in winter – via the slope. In summer it is about a 25-minute walk from Brennes (trail Lo3); further trails start in Bayerisch-Eisenstein, at the Kleiner Arbersee, in Bodenmais and in Sommerau. In winter, take the Sonnenhang chairlift into the ski area and then the blue slope to the hut.
What are the opening hours?
From 4 July 2026, daily from 10:30 to 17:00, no rest day. Individual closures due to weather are possible.
Is there a charging station for e-bikes?
Yes. Right at the house there is a charging station for 6 e-bikes (6 Schuko sockets) and plenty of bike parking. The Arber Bikepark is only a few metres away.
Do I need to reserve a table?
We ask groups of 20 or more to reserve – via the online reservation form or by phone at 09925 - 1379 (+49 9925 1379).
Can I hold a celebration at Berghaus Sonnenfels?
Yes. The sun terrace and the dining rooms each seat up to 160 guests and can be combined for larger events. For smaller private parties, Leon's Arber Hütte right next to the Berghaus can be rented for about 40 people.
Is it suitable for children and families?
Yes. Since 2023 there is an adventure playground at the edge of the forest with a Sennerei play house, sandpit, climbing tower with slide and swings. In winter, tobogganing and skiing are possible right at the house.
What food and drinks are served?
Traditional Bavarian cuisine and cool drinks. The current menus can be downloaded on the "Menu" page.
